As Shakespeare said, “Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and others have greatness thrust upon ’em.”
Relatedly, leaders find coaches for three reasons.
Pure coaching is designed to bring out the strength and intelligence of the leader – not the coach. When done well, you will experience an integrity to your leadership that will feel like an true expression of who you are. If you’ve ever wished for the time and space to think deeply, with a sounding board that had no agenda but to help you find your own best answers, that is ideally what coaching enables – clarity, certainty, alignment.
There will also be times when you’re wanting solutions you just don’t have. A professional coach will have years of experience and best practice to share with you, ideally helping you tailor solutions to fit your leadership approach, values, and strengths.
Executive leadership coaching will also help you avoid common pitfalls that others experience in the absence of the right support. And the wise wish to be corrected.
In practice, how coaching helps leaders is by sharpening their clarity, strengthening resilience, and steadying them for high-stakes decisions. With a coach beside them, leaders move past overwhelm, stop second-guessing, and return to leading with composure and impact.
This works because the best coaching begins with self-knowledge.
I believe the first responsibility of leadership is to know yourself. Executive coaching offers something rare: deep insight into who you are, the effect you have on others, and a confidential space to access your own best thinking.
Leadership coaching helps you:
No one is perfect, but here are some things to pay attention to. Avoid a coach that talks more than they listen. Avoid coaches that are not curious about who you truly are. Avoid coaches that do the work for you, rather than having you think things through for yourself. Avoid coaches that are only supportive, commiserate with you, and do not challenge you. Conversely, avoid coaches that judge you. Do you step away from the coaching session with more power or less? More power is the goal.
Here is how coaching helps leaders become stronger and more resourceful. By looking for a coach that makes you do the work.
Years ago I realized that my ideal as a coach was to be Stupid, Heartless, and Lazy. This requires a huge amount of restraint. Let me explain.
I am a coaching purist, and from my experience, true coaches need to help you find your own answers, which is why they need to be deliberately “stupid” as much as possible. They may be tremendously resourceful and experienced, but they will push you to do your best thinking, rather than doing it for you. Thinking for yourself is required for change, helping you become resourceful and trust in yourself, not dependent on the coach.
Professional coaches will not buy your excuses, which is where “heartless” – or healthy detachment – is important. They will not rescue you but instead push power to you and challenge you to step up.
And a true coach ideally sits on their hands and aims to be “lazy”, letting you do as much of your own work as possible. This is difficult as most coaches, including me, want to be deeply helpful. My aim is to always tap your resources first before sharing my own, again to make you stronger. That said, I have 22 years of solutions available when you truly need them.
What is the outcome of all this? You will know yourself deeply, have bespoke solutions you have designed for yourself, and will trust yourself more than ever before. You will also know your weaknesses and be able to lead with those in mind.
